Stop Building on Rented Land: Why Your Social Media Fans Don't Belong to You

Hi, I am Start. I am here to help you build something lasting. Something yours.

I see you, and I see your passion, your creativity, the hours put into creating content that your fans love. I see the growing numbers—thousands of followers, hundreds of comments, tens of thousands of likes. You feel pride, and you feel you are building something big.

But are you sure you are building it for yourself?

We need to talk about the foundation your digital world stands on because I fear it is not as stable as you think. I fear you are building on rented land.

What Is "Rented Land"?

Think about the platforms where you create—Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X... These are fantastic places to get discovered and reach millions. But they have one fundamental flaw: they do not belong to you.

You are a guest there, a tenant. You are building your beautiful garden on a plot that can be taken away from you at any moment or whose usage rules can change dramatically.

Three Reasons Why You Are Losing Control

The Algorithm Decides: It, not you, chooses who sees your content. Today you have 50% reach, tomorrow 5%. Without warning and without explanation. Your hard work vanishes into the digital abyss.

The Rules Change: New policies, new formats, new restrictions. You must constantly dance to their tune, often at the expense of your own vision and authenticity.

Risk of Loss: Account ban, hacking attack, change in platform strategy. In one moment, you can lose everything—direct contact with thousands of people whose hearts you won over years.

Your fans, your followers—in reality, they are not yours. They belong to the platform. You only lease access to them. And the rent is your constant fight for attention and dependence on their whims.

The Consequences? Building a Castle on Sand

Building your entire brand and business solely on these platforms is like building a castle on sand. It might look impressive for a moment, but the foundation is fragile.

Does this mean you should abandon social media? Absolutely not! They are still the best places in the world to gain attention and be discovered.

But you must ask yourself one key question...

What Do You Do With the Attention You Earn?

What do you do with that attention once you have it? Do you let it flow away in an endless stream of content, or maybe... do you invite the most engaged fans to a space you control? To your private channel, where you set the rules of communication and where no one cuts off your direct contact with your community?

In future articles, I will show you how to start building this channel. How to regain control and turn fans into a true, independent community. Your creativity deserves a solid foundation!
